Dr. Emily Feneberg is a consultant neurologist and postdoctoral researcher at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. I have completed my PhD the “Development of a TDP-43 based biomarker” at the University of Oxford, Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences in 2020.

As a clinician and scientist Dr. Feneberg’s focus is the development of neurochemical biomarkers in blood and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with motor neuron disease (MND) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Both are fast progressing diseases, and the diagnosis is often made late when the therapeutic window is already greatly narrowed. She made an important contribution to the development of neurofilaments as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in MND and FTD.

This involved the recruitment of well-defined study cohorts, sample collection and analysis using antibody-based techniques. Using mass spectrometry her research group now focuses on the development of disease-specific biomarkers for TDP-43 proteinopathies in patients’ biofluids, based on a technique for the quantification of pathological TDP-43 peptides in the brain of ALS patients. Leading a dementia outpatient clinic specialized on FTD she aims to develop a TDP-43 proteinopathy specific biomarker that has an added value to current biomarkers. This work is currently supported by her team of 5 highly motivated researchers.
